Hello and welcome!

Welcome to our school and our website. We hope you will find the information here useful, whether you already have a child in school or are considering us for your child's first steps in education.

We are a friendly and nurturing school located in Earlsheaton; a small village near the centre of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. We cater for children aged 4 to 7 and currently have 120 places in 4 classes, some mixed-age. We are usually full in all year groups but if you are interested in a place then please contact our office to ask about the Kirklees Admissions procedure and how to apply to be added to the waiting list.

We offer a broad and stimulating curriculum, an on-site breakfast club and a variety of after school activities through the year. We believe that the first few years in school are the most crucial in setting the tone for the rest of your child's education and we take this responsibility very seriously. We are committed to helping every child discover and unlock their potential and look forward to working in close partnership with parents and carers to give our children the best possible start in life.

We are proud to hold the Leeds Carnegie Mental Health in Schools Award at Gold Level, the Arts Award at Gold Level, Music Mark, the Historic England Local History Award and the Eco Schools Bronze Award. All of these things enhance our excellent academic provision and help our children grow into resilient, curious, confident individuals.

We are very proud of our little school and can't wait to tell you all about it! If you would like to find out more then go to the menu to explore our website. If you would like to vist school then please call the office to make an appointment and we would be delighted to show you around.

We look forward to welcoming you into our family!

Mrs Wendy Kelly

  • I've just found out that Eid celebrations fall on Wednesday 10th April, which is when we had scheduled our parents evening for. Since this would prevent some parents in all classes and one of our teachers being able to attend, we have made the decision to move it. Parents evening will now take place on Wednesday 17th April. The appointment time you have booked will remain the same.  Many apologies for moving the date but we want to make sure everyone can attend.
  • Have you joined our new Parent App? Go to the App/Android Store amd search for Weduc. The app is called Reach More Parents. If we have a valid email address for you in school you will have been sent a link. Any problems come and see Mrs Hill.
  • Please join your child's Class Dojo group; you'll see photos and get messages that only the class group of parents/carers has access to. If you can't remember how to join, just ask the class teacher for a log-in.
  • Bookbags are available from the school office, priced at £6.00.
  • All children in Years One and Two, must have a a PE kit in school please. This is a plain white T-Shirt and navy or black shorts or leggings or joggers and pumps. Long hair must be tied back and earrings removed or covered in tape- this is availbel in the office to buy for £1. Reception do not need their PE kits in school yet.
  • School uniform is grey skirt or trousers or school-type dress. A white or light blue polo shirt and a navy blue school jumper or cardigan or hoody. These can have the school logo or not, it's entirely up to you. Black school shoes or black/mostly black trainers. Please encourage your child to be independant when dressing/undressing at home as they will need to get changed themselves for PE. We have many items of good quality spare uniform available in school. If you would like to take anything then please ask at the office.
  • We are have an 'active' uniform in reception, as much of their curriculum takes place outside. This is a navy blue hoody (either with or without the school logo), black or navy joggers or leggings and trainers. As this is a trial there is no expectation for you to buy new items, but if your child likes being outside then this is a good way of keeping them warm and cosy without the need for a coat.
  • We understand that times are difficult for us all, due to the cost of living and energy crises. If you are struggling then please tell us, we can put you in touch with foodbanks or other agencies who may be able to help.
  • Holiday requests: Taking your child out of school for a term time holiday is not a right. We are only able to authorise absence in very special, limited circumstances. This is the law, not our choice. We share an Attendance Policy with the other local schools (you can read this by clicking on the picture of the policy on the right hand side, at the top of this page. If you can't see this on your phone then turn it sideways and look at it in landscape). This means that if you have children here and at Bywell you will fill in the same form.  If you are considering a holiday then please call into the office for a 'Term Time Absence Request' form, putting in the dates and the reason why it has to be in term term. We will then let you know if the absence can be authorised, or if it will be unauthorised and whether a penalty notice (fine) will be issued by Kirklees. This is currently £60 per child per week per parent. Please note this money does not benefit school but is paid directly to the council.

    World Book Day 2024
This is the text of the letter I have just sent out on Class Dojo, about World Book Day. Dear Parents/Carers World Book Day 2024 Non-uniform and Bring a Story World Book Day is on Thursday 7th March this year. We would like to celebrate it with a ‘bedtime stories’ theme again. This means your child can come to school on that day wearing their pyjamas or onesies and bring their favourite bedtime story with them, to share with the class. If your child doesn’t want to wear their night clothes to school then casual leggings and a T-shirt will be fine; the main thing is being comfy and warm all day. Free Book Instead of bringing the £1 World Book Day voucher home we have arranged for each child to receive an official World Book Day book, instead. These will be given out on Thursday 7th March. Competition If you and your child want an extra bit of book-related fun we are holding a competition. Your challenge is to turn an ordinary potato in to a book character of your choice! You can use pens, paint, fabric, paper, card, recycled items or any craft materials you may have at home to add features and costumes to your potato. Hopefully, we’ll be able to tell who it is, but just in case, please write your child’s name and the name of their character on a piece of paper to go with it. Children should bring them into school the day before World Book Day, on Wednesday 6th March so they can be judged. There will be a prize for the best one in each class. If you need some inspiration google ‘World Book Day Potatoes’ and have a look at what other people have been making. Wendy Kelly Headteacher

    Snow
As the snow is starting to settle we are more than happy if you want to come and collect your children early. I know a lot of you who walk and have pushchairs might find it tricky to get here if we make you all wait until 3.15pm. Just come to main entrance and we'll retrieve your child from singing practice in the hall.

    Snow forecast Thursday 8th Feb
I'm sure you've all had the weather alerts for snow tomorrow. It doesn't always turn out like it's forecast, but the Met Office are giving an Amber warning, which means only travel if you have to. As it's a pain not getting any decisions about whether school is open or not until the last minute I've decided to make an executive decision: If there is snow falling and sticking first thing in the morning then we will have a late start and open to children at 10am. This gives us plenty of time to see whether it's going to get worse and so we can decide not to open at all or to go ahead with the 10am opening. I know this will cause some parents disruption and I do apologise for this but we have to put the safety of our children and staff first. Please note this also means there will be no breakfast club tomorrow. Hopefully it will all be a fuss about nothing and we can open as normal at 8.45am (in which case breakfast club will be running). I will confirm early tomorrow if it's sticking and building up and if we're going ahead with the 10am start.

    Behaviour as Communication workshop
Hello everyone! Have you ever watched your child have a meltdown and wondered what on earth is wrong with them? Maybe you only asked them to put their coat on. Perhaps you gave them a plate for tea and the beans were touching the fish fingers. Perhaps they will only think about getting into bed if they have said goodnight to every single teddy bear in their bedroom. When children are learning to deal with their emotions and don't have a developed vocabulary to explain how they feel their behaviour is the only way they can let you know something is not right with them. But what do you do with that behaviour and how to do you move them on without tears and a tantrum. Our community support worker, Dee, is holding a VERY informal workshop in school on Friday 24th November at 9am to look at some typical behaviour and how you can help your child break out of the meltdown cycle. You can just come and listen if you don't want to join in with the discussion but you'll pick up some useful hints and tips Please come along if you can.

    Head Lice
Just to let you all know that the nits are back in school. Please check your child's head and treat with a potion from the chemists if you find any crawlies. I think if you take evidence of a louse with you they will still give you some for free; always worth asking.

Christmas fair date change/ non-uniform day
Hello everyone! We have moved the Christmas fair date so that it doesn't clash with another event, which would tae staff away fro being able to set up the fair. The new date I Thursday 7th December from 2.30pm. Please come along and support us, as all the money raised goes straight back into buying new indoor and outdoor resources for your children. One of our most popular stalls is always the bottle tombola, so this Frida, 17th November, children may come in non-uniform and bring a bottle for the stall- it can be anything like wine, beer, ketchup, shampoo... as long as it's in a bottle that's all that matters. We're not doing Children in Need this year as it falls on the same date.
